The iPrep™ Purification Instrument (Figure 1) is designed for automated nucleic acid purification using magnetic bead-based adsorption and separation technology. Using any of the iPrep™ kits available from Life Technologies, the iPrep™ Purification Instrument is the ideal platform for automated, rapid, and reliable nucleic acid purification from a variety of samples, typically within 20 – 30 minutes (Figure 2).

Magnetic Bead-Based Nucleic Acid Purification
The advantage of magnetic bead technology lies in the ease with which beads in suspension can be magnetically extracted from solution and re-suspended into a new liquid medium. The iPrep™ Purification Instrument relies on this technology, as well as novel surface affinity chemistries, to specifically extract and purify nucleic acids from a wide variety of sample types. By trapping magnetic beads and their bound nucleic acids against the sidewalls of pipetting tips, the iPrep™ Purification Instrument is able to efficiently and rapidly wash, recover, and elute nucleic acids extracted from a variety of sample types.

Compatible with Multiple Nucleic Acid Extraction Technologies
Each sample type presents unique challenges for nucleic acid extraction and purification, and Life Technologies offers several kits for use with the iPrep™ Purification Instrument, each designed for a specific application. The iPrep™ Purification Instrument can be used with beads that employ either ChargeSwitch® or PureLink® surface chemistries. ChargeSwitch® technology presents a switchable surface charge on each bead, whose affinity for nucleic acid is pH-dependent—nucleic acid binding and elution is modulated by pH only. This technology supports DNA purification in the absence of strong denaturants (such as guanidine) and ethanol, reducing the likelihood of downstream process inhibition by these reagents. PureLink® technology, by contrast, uses an optimized silica-like surface chemistry for highly efficient and specific nucleic acid binding.

Choose the Extraction Kit for Your Application
Reagents are supplied in prefilled cartridges (available separately as part of the iPrep™ kits), specially prepared for the extraction of DNA from blood, tissue, buccal and forensic samples (such as dried blood, hair follicles and cigarette butts). Two RNA extraction kits, the iPrep™ PureLink® Total RNA Kit and the iPrep™ Trizol® Plus RNA Kit are also available.
