α-BODIPY® 500/510 C₁₂-HPC has the dye attached to the sn-2-acyl chain via a C₁₂ alkyl chain. BODIPY® 500/510 can form excimers at high concentrations and unlike fluorophores like pyrene, DPH and NBD, BODIPY® FL is relatively environment insensitive and is fluorescent in both aqueous and lipid environments.
