The protein encoded by the SMARCA4 (SWI/SNF related, matrix associated, actin dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily A, member 4) is similar to the brahma protein of Drosophila. It forms part of the large ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex SNF/SWI, required for transcriptional activation of genes that are normally repressed in chromatin. It can be recruited by acetylated lysines that serve as epigenetic tags on histones. Mutations in the SMARCA4 protein have been identified in cancer cell lines from breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, and colon.
