PRDM4 (Positive Regulatory Domain 4) belongs to a family of zinc-finger motif transcription factors involved in cell differentiation and development. Disregulation of PRD family transcription factors results in uncontrolled cell proliferation. This protein family contains a defining conserved PR domain (a motif with lysine N-methyl transferase activity), followed by a set of zinc-finger motifs. However, only PRDM2 and PRDM9 have been shown to have methyl transferase activities. PRDM4 specifically has a PR-zinc knuckle motif followed by zinc-fingers, and has been implied in transduction of nerve growth factor signal by interacting with neurotrophin receptor and cell growth arrest. The gene is located on chromosome arm 12q23; in a region that is thought to contain tumor suppressor gene.
