CBX-3, or Chromobox homolog 3, is encoded by the cbx3 gene located on chromosome 7. CBX 3 is also known as Heterochromatin protein 1 homolog gamma (HP1). This protein is ubiquitously expressed and localized in the nucleus (1). CBX-3 is an important component of heterochromatin and due to its dual binding capacity can bind heterochromatin to the lamin B receptor present on the inner nuclear membrane. This protein also mediates chromatin remodeling and DNA dependent negative regulation of transcription by binding to methylated lys-9 residues in histone tails (2). CBX 3 is also known to play a role in DNA damage repair induced by UV radiation or double strand breaks.
