Specific for RB1 [pS780]
RB1, also known as Retinoblastoma, is a tumor suppressor protein that belongs to the Pocket protein family. It is nuclear protein that is widely expressed in retinal cells. pRB1 prevents the replication of damaged DNA by preventing its progression along the cell cycle through G1 to S. It is inactivated by phosphorylation and activated by dephosphorylation. Active (dephosphorylated) pRB1 binds and inactivates the cellular transcription factor E2F1, the function of which is required for cell cycle progression. In humans, the protein is encoded by the RB11 gene located on the q arm of chromosome 13. Aurora B directly phosphorylates RB1 at serine 780 both in vitro and in vivo. This novel interaction plays a critical role in regulating the postmitotic checkpoint to prevent endoreduplication after an aberrant mitosis.
