Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is 175 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein and belongs to tyrosine kinase superfamily. EGFR acts as a receptor for epidermal growth factor (EGF) family. Binding of EGFR to its ligands causes autophosphorylation of tyrosine kinase followed by activation of signal transduction of the pathways connected to cell proliferation and differentiation. Phosphorylation at Tyrosine 1148, activated EGFR and increases tyrosine kinase activity towards a variety of intracellular substrates. Deregulation of EGFR expression has been connected to carcinogenesis and metastasis. EGFR has been a major focus for targeted cancer therapy in recent times.
