Tumor nectosis factor - alpha (TNF-α), is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by activated macrophages and belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It induces neutrophil proliferation during inflammation, but also induces neutrophil apoptosis upon binding to the TNF-R55 receptor. TNF-α is involved in the regulation of a wide range of biological processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It is involved in necrosis of some types of tumors, and a variety of diseases, including autoimmune diseases and insulin resistance. In mouse, the gene encoding TNF-α is located on chromosome 17.
