Oligoclonal antibodies are produced by transfection of mammalian cells with heavy and light chain antibody cDNAs. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) belongs to a family of heparin-binding growth factors that are the major mediators of vasculogenesis and angiogenesis both during development and in pathological conditions. VEGF has a variety of effects on vascular endothelium, including promoting endothelial cell viability, mitogenesis, chemotaxis, and vascular permeability; it also has autocrine functions. VEGF acts as a survival factor for tumor cells, protecting them from stresses such as hypoxia, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. VEGF is a 45 kDa homodimeric glycoprotein, but other isoforms may be produced through alternative splicing.
