STAT2 (Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 2), belongs to the family of STAT proteins, which in response to cytokines and growth factors undergo phosphorylation by the receptor-associated kinases and act as transcription factors once they are translocated to the nucleus. STAT2 is involved in interferon alpha transcription and STAT1 phosphorylation and it is also required for myogenic differentiation. In humans, the STAT2 gene is located on the q arm of chromosome 12. Splicing variants produce two isoforms for human STAT2.
