Specific for Insulin

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the islet cells of the pancreas. It plays a central role in blood glucose homeostasis. It functions by increasing the cell permeability to monosaccharides, amino acids, and fatty acids. It also accelerates glycolysis, pentose phosphate cycle, and glycogen synthesis in liver. Mature insulin is formed after pro-insulin undergoes cleavage into 3 peptides of which the A and B chains are covalently linked via 2 disulphide bonds. Insulin binds to insulin receptor to stimulate glucose uptake.
