Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1, CD54) is a member of the immunoglobulin super-family and is critical for the firm arrest and transmigration of leukocytes out of blood vessels and into tissues. ICAM-1 is constitutively present on endothelial cells, but its expression is increased by proinflammatory cytokines. Its expression on smooth muscle cells results in leukocyte accumulation and mononuclear cell activation; recent data suggest that the expression of adhesion molecules on smooth muscle cells are cell cycle-dependent and influence smooth muscle cell proliferation and differentiation.
