Apo A1, also known as apolipoprotein A1, is present on chromosome 11 and is primarily synthesized in the liver. The protein is also made in the small intestine and is regulated by the dietary intake of lipids. It is also the major constituent of the human high density lipoprotein (HDL) and plays an important role in the metabolic and transport functions of lipoproteins of the serum. The protein acts as an activator for the enzyme lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase which converts cholesterol to cholesteryl esters. During lypolysis in the peripheral tissue, Apo A1 can also play a role as an acceptor for surface components of very low density lipoproteins and chylomicrons.
