Apolipoprotein C3 is primarily made in the liver and circulates in plasma in combination with Apo B lipoprotein and high density lipoproteins. The protein acts as an antagonist to Apo C2 and Apo E, preventing lipolysis by the lipoprotein lipase enzyme and also the clearance of apo B. The protein is expressed by a gene on chromosome 11.
