Interleukin-23 (IL-23) is a member of the IL-12 cytokine family and is produced by dendritic cells and other antigen-presenting cells located in the peripheral tissues. This cytokine is a heterodimer composed of the IL-12p40 subunit and p19 subunit. IL-23 is required for the induction, expansion, maintenance, and downstream effector functions of Th17 cells. Th17 cells play a vital role in upregulating neutrophil chemokines and various pro-inflammatory cytokines . IL-23 interacts with receptors IL-12Rbeta1 and IL-23R and activates the Jak-Stat signaling cascade. It also plays an important role in stimulating memory T-cells .
