Integrins are cell surface receptors that interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) and mediate intracellular signals in response to contact with the ECM. Integrins are composed of alpha and beta subunits and form structural and functional linkages between the ECM and intracellular cytoskeletal linker proteins. Signaling mediated from integrin/ECM interactions are also integrated with cellular responses to growth factor signaling to regulate cellular proliferation, cytoskeletal reorganization, and other responses necessary for cellular survival. Integrin alpha 6 is predominantly expressed by epithelial tissues.
