PDGFR-alpha (Platelet-derived growth factor receptor – alpha polypeptide), belongs to the protein tyrosine kinase family of proteins and PDGF receptor subfamily which consists of two isoforms - alpha and beta. PDGF receptors are cell surface receptor and are mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. Activated PDGF receptors lead to control of cell growth, actin reorganization, migration, and differentiation in various signaling pathways. In humans, the gene is located on the q arm of chromosome 4. Mutation of PDGFR-alpha in humans results in cleft palate type malformations. Postnatally, PDGFR-alpha is associated with gliomas and fibrotic disorders of lung, heart and skin (scleroderma).
