E-Cadherin (Epithelial – Cadherin), belongs to the Cadherin (Calcium dependent adhesion protein) superfamily, which is involved in calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. E-Cadherin, which is also known as Uvomorulin, is encoded by the CDH1 gene present on human chromosome 16. E-Cadherin is expressed primarily in epithelial cells. It plays a central role in the growth and development of cells through control of tissue architecture and the maintenance of tissue integrity. E-cadherin is considered an active suppressor of invasion and growth of many epithelial tumors. Recent studies show that the loss of function of this gene contributes to progression of cancer by increasing proliferation, invasion, and/or metastasis.
