IL13, or Interleukin 13, is an immunoregulatory cytokine produced primarily by activated Th2 cells. IL13 is involved in various functions such as B-cell maturation and differentiation, up-regulation of MHC class II expression, down-regulation of macrophage activity, and inhibition of production of proinflammatory cytokines like IFNG, IL1, IL6 and TNF-α. IL13 is a non-glycosylated protein of 132 amino acids, containing 5 cysteine residues. The structure of the IL13 gene closely resembles those of IL3, IL4, IL5 and GMCSF. Mature human IL13 shares around 55 % sequence similarity with mouse and rat IL13.
