LRRK2 (Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2), an enzyme commonly known as Dardarin, belongs to the leucine-rich repeat kinase family. The LRRK2 gene is active in brain and other tissues. A part of the gene provides instructions for synthesis of a protein segment that is rich in leucine. Proteins with leucine-rich regions appear to play a role in activities requiring protein-protein interactions, such as transmitting signals or helping to assemble the cell's structural framework. LRRK2 also possesses a GTPase activity. Phosphorylation at specific sites (e.g. serine 910 and serine 935) determines 14-3-3 binding to LRRK2; 14-3-3 is a regulator of LRRK2-mediated cellular activities. Anomalies in the LRRK2 gene are associated with Parkinson's disease. In humans, the gene encoding LRRK2 is present on the q arm of chromosome 12.
