Hygromycin B is a water-soluble antibiotic purified from the bacterium Streptomyces hydroscopicus. Hygromycin B acts by binding to the 80S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibiting protein synthesis. Gibco® Hygromycin B is used as a bacterial selective antibiotic in the concentration range of 100 - 1000 µg / ml. This product is supplied as a 50 mg / ml solution. Resistance to Hygromycin B is conferred by the E. coli hygromycin resistance gene (hyg or hph). Hygromycin B uses a different mode of action than Geneticin®, Blasticidin S, or Zeocin™, so it is excellent for use in dual-selection experiments when used in conjunction with another selection agent (see selection antibiotics).
